You might be right. On the other hand I truly believe nobody could have expected the rapid turn around that we have seen in the world economy. Companies have shut down activities in the four months
at a pace never seen before. Economy is based on historical data and event. This crisis is not comparable to anyting. However, there might be some good news out there, Citigroup today announce
profit in January and February (helped by the loan from the US probalby but still profits) and AT&T announced it would hire 3000 people and spend another $18bn, which is a total u-turn in
speech from what we heard in december.
So you might be right Depression is on the way but I am not giving up just yet.

Hi Steve. Actually I want to be fully invested all the time with my portfolio. I believe in the theory that investors are supposed to diversify their risk not the fund manager. So personally as a
rule of thumb I am never fully invested in stocks because I believe my risk needs to be diversify. For this site, I am not going to use cash to lower my beta and diversify my portfolio risk, I
expect investors to do it on their own.
However if I were an investors I would make sure I don't have 100% of my money invested in the stock market. Markets are too volatile and the crisis is not behind us yet. But I would still have at
least 50%-60% because historically this asset class has ouperformed the other ones.
There could be better investment scheme right now in the corporate bond market with really high yield corporate bond.
I hope this help
Hi Steve -
Your question is legitimate. The last couple years, the carry trade (borrow cheap yen at almost 0 interest rate to buy US Equities) was the biggest reason there was a negative correlation between
the yen and the US Equities. Today, people are unwinding their carry trade since they do not invest anymore in the US (Real Estate or Equities) and you see the inverse move with the yen
strenghtening and the US Equities dropping. However in the future I don't think it will work as well since the Fed Funds Rate are at 0 like in Japan and the numerous actions taken by the Fed and
the US treasury should weaken the dollar a little more against other currency.
About the Japanese Banks, in general the biggest Japanese companies have ADR in the US. You should look on CNBC.COM, I am 100% sure the mega japanese banks have ADR in the US. But make sure to
check the volume traded everyday, you don't want to invest in an illiquid stock.
By the way, would you like me to reference your blog on my website and you would do the same with my blog on your website? Let me know if you have any interest?

Thanks again for checking and don't hesitate to ask me questions anytime
